I just wanted to reinforce some comments I made and perhaps qualify them a little better…this is largely from a conversation in the comments that I think would be useful to folks only reading reviews. My original review is still below this update.

First, the fact that the remote fails to control my Sony receiver actually turns out to be frustrating. Some basic controls are just missing (e.g., selecting decoding options) and the menu controls are spotty. Numerous buttons on the remote just fail to map to anything meaningful on the receiver when it seems like they should. For a Sony receiver that is a couple of years old, I think it reasonable to be disappointed in the remote’s performance.

As far as controlling non-Sony branded TVs, if it wasn’t intended to be a universal remote then Sony wouldn’t have made it a universal remote. My complaint is that the effort seems cursory: each remote code I tried would sort of give me some control over the TV that others wouldn’t. Between them all, pretty much every feature was covered. So, the problem isn’t that the remote specifically CAN’T control the TV, the problem is that the remote clearly CAN control the TV, yet fails to do so with a single remote code.

Notably, my TV is a 2011 Panasonic–brand new and a major brand. This is a big company with a lot of TVs in consumer homes. I wouldn’t say that Sony ensuring their remote can control non-Sony TVs better would be overly accommodating to their TV competitors. Else, why would Sony have made the remote universal at all? Their competition in this venue is other universal remote manufacturers who haven’t exactly done a great job at accommodating the PS3′s bluetooth remote feature; hence, Sony’s remote should be steering me AWAY from a Harmony, not toward one. Some comments mentioned that people wanting a more full-featured universal experience should look at a Harmony, but that is totally counter-intuitive to me.

The point is the remote doesn’t really do a great job at controlling even recent Sony receivers, and it teases at doing a good job with (at least 2011 Panasonic) TVs, but fails to deliver. The remote is still useful, but, in my opinion, does not achieve 5-star-worthy functionality.

I was pretty excited when I first heard about this universal remote. I had been seeking a universal remote to consolidate my others and I wasn’t thrilled at the prospects–frankly, the idea of spending 40-50 dollars for the Logitech PS3 adapter on top of the already expensive Logitech remote was not appealing. So, when I heard this remote was coming to stores in late October/early November, I was really hoping for something that would be cheaper than a Logitech solution. Fortunately, it completely met my expectations as far as price goes. Assuming the remote does its job, the MSRP is pretty reasonable.

Unfortunately, I wouldn’t say the remote does its job well enough. Of course it is a fully functioning PS3 remote, no surprises there. I knew from the outset that this remote would only control Sony branded receivers. I have a Sony receiver so I wasn’t too worried about that and for my (totally entry level) receiver it works well enough. I can adjust the volume, inputs, mute, power off and on. It teases me with menu access but it is impossible to navigate the menu once it is open. That was a little weird but I generally don’t mess around in the receiver menus, so that didn’t bother me so much. I feel like the remote is largely lacking in TV compatibility. I have a 2011 Panasonic GT30 series 3D TV and despite trying every code for the remote, I can only get rudimentary TV controls to work (e.g., power, volume, channels, awkward input switching).

Similarly to the receiver, some codes allow the remote to open the TV menus, but no code allows me to navigate the menus! C’mon, how hard can it possibly be to repurpose the 4-way directional circle and the middle button to navigation/menu selection buttons? The lack of functional navigation buttons causes issues with other necessary features like input switching. With my TV’s remote, I can open the input menu and highlight different inputs with directional buttons and select an input with the enter button. It works exactly how you would expect it to. However, this Sony remote only allows input switching by repeatedly pressing the input button, which cycles through inputs (actually changing the input) in one direction only. So if I want to switch to an input that is above my current input in the menu list, I am forced to change the TV input several times, whereas with functional navigation buttons, I could just hit menu, hit up once or twice, and hit ‘enter’ effectively changing inputs only once. It is really cumbersome and would clearly not be a problem if the remote’s navigation…

Excellent “universal lite” remote, December 5, 2011

During a move, I lost the remote for my Samsung TV. Instead of getting a new remote for Samsung, I decided to give this PS3 remote a try. It worked out perfectly.

Programming is a standard fare for a universal remote in this price range — you find your TV’s model from the manual, and enter the corresponding code into the remote. On the heels of the successful Wits & Wagers comes the 3rd offereing from Northstar Games: Say Anything!

Say Anything comes packed with a ton of random questions that players select to read to their friends. After eveyone writes down an opinion on their little wipeboard, the reader secretly decides the answer they like best. Everyone then bets on the answer(s) they think the reader will select. Once the reader’s choice is revealed, points are scored.

This game plays a lot like Apples to Apples but is better on a few counts.
- The questions and anwers make sense. Since everyone writes tehir own, it is always applicable tot he question. There is no forcing of two unrelated cards.
- The game is more personal. It’s all about you and your friends and what they like and think.
- There is a maximum 3 points that can be awarded to each player, each round. So it keeps the game tight until the end and balances a windfall of points on “obvious” answers.
- Though it is subjective, there is a chance to be consistent in answering if you know a little about the reader.

My friends have all enjoyed this game. This is another game where they play it and want to go out and buy it the next day. This is a great game that should be added to every party gamer’s collection!

I first played this game at the Gen Con board game convention, not knowing at all what it was about. After our first demo I knew I had to get it. I was very surprised because this game was actually fun with a large group of people that I didn’t know at all! Now that I’ve got it back to my family, it’s even more of a blast playing with people I do know!

I just LOVE the fact that I can explain it to people so quickly; no long drawn out rules. I even had one match where a friend of mine had to leave and another sat in (who had just arrived) and really didn’t even need to ask how to play!

Another great aspect is that the game is really customized to the group you play with so it can be great fun with both a G rated group and an R rated group. It definitely helps to have a creative and humorous group of friends playing it though.

The one complaint I have though is the pens, they seem to dry out rather quickly. Although I can’t complain much because with a quick email to Northstar I received a whole extra set of pens that allowed me to replace the dried out ones.

Overall I would bring this out at any party and recommend it. A fun way to get to know people and have a lot of laughs.

They have produced another crazy party game that is geared towards gamers and non-gamers alike. So is it as good as those games? Read on... <br/><br/>What do you get with Say Anything? The contents of Say Anything include a nice big rulesheet, a score board, a stack of question cards, 8 dry erase markers, 8 answer boards in different colors, 16 betting chips in the same 8 colors, and one Select-O-Matic 5000. All the components are good quality and will hold up to repeated plays. And Northstar went the extra mile by adding a unique symbol to each color so that the game is 100% color-blind friendly. <br/><br/>How does Say Anything work? Gameplay is really fairly simple. Each player gets a dry erase marker, an answer board, and the 2 chips that match the color of their board. One player starts as the judge by taking the Select-O-Matic 5000 and a question card. On each card are 5 different question, and the judge gets to pick whichever question he/she prefers to read. The questions are fairly wide-ranging, for instance "What is the most overrated song of all time?" or "What would be the worst pizza topping?" <br/>Once the judge reads a question, the other players write an answer down on their boards and then place them face-up on the table. When all the answers are down, the judge uses the Select-O-Matic 5000 to secretly dial up the color of the board that has their favorite answer. The guys who brought us Cluzzle and Wits & Wagers are at it again. They have produced another crazy party game that is geared towards gamers and non-gamers alike. So is it as good as those games? Read on…

What do you get with Say Anything? The contents of Say Anything include a nice big rulesheet, a score board, a stack of question cards, 8 dry erase markers, 8 answer boards in different colors, 16 betting chips in the same 8 colors, and one Select-O-Matic 5000. All the components are good quality and will hold up to repeated plays. And Northstar went the extra mile by adding a unique symbol to each color so that the game is 100% color-blind friendly.

How does Say Anything work? Gameplay is really fairly simple. Each player gets a dry erase marker, an answer board, and the 2 chips that match the color of their board. One player starts as the judge by taking the Select-O-Matic 5000 and a question card. On each card are 5 different question, and the judge gets to pick whichever question he/she prefers to read. The questions are fairly wide-ranging, for instance “What is the most overrated song of all time?” or “What would be the worst pizza topping?”
Once the judge reads a question, the other players write an answer down on their boards and then place them face-up on the table. When all the answers are down, the judge uses the Select-O-Matic 5000 to secretly dial up the color of the board that has their favorite answer.
